May 18

Maybe you saw the e-mails for this one. Here’s a sample Kipley sent out:

The Fuzzy Lemons’ May 18th gig at The Goldhawk is rapidly approaching! Our last show there attracted so many people that, unfortunately, some people were unable to get in.

To avoid this problem, we have decided to sell tickets to the May 18th event, and as I post this, fewer than 35 tickets remain. (If you would like to be among the first to know about ticket sales and other info, please join the mailing list on our site.)

EVERYONE MUST HAVE A TICKET… both grown ups and kids. When you purchase your tickets, your name will be added to our guest list for the event.

Tickets are a mere $5 each, and they include a FREE DRINK FOR ALL ADULTS, sponsored by Wachovia Securities. The Fuzzy Lemons and a complimentary cocktail? Can you beat that?!

But wait… there’s more: A representative of Wachovia Securities will also be conducting complimentary financial evaluations during the event. Are you kidding me… The Fuzzy Lemons, free drinks, AND complimentary financial evaluations? Does it GET any better than that?!

So, please… Visit our site, click on the button for Goldhawk tickets, and make SURE you and your family will get in to this rockin’ event. (Secure transactions conducted by PayPal exclusively.)

We’ve got some blazing new tunes we’re premiering at the Goldhawk, and we’re ready to rock! DON’T MISS THIS GIG!

It was fun watching the tickets fly out the (virtual) door. After four big shows in Hoboken, it seemed that the town still wanted more. We did sell every ticket, which brought in more than the tip jar had at the last Goldhawk gig, but not significantly more because (a) tickets were only $5 and (b) the capacity of the Goldhawk is only 80.

Considering the numbers, and watching the crowd dwindle in the second hour of our show (we played from 4:00 to 6:00 with a break after the first hour), I thought that maybe we should try doing two shows next time, instead of two sets: selling tickets for the 4:00 show and again for a separate 5:00 show. This idea worked very well at our next Goldhawk show, as you’ll see when I get around to posting the next entry in the Gig Diary.

What’s that? You want to know about the show itself? It was a hoot. Dave Entwistle did the sound for us, and as always his big smile behind the sound board was like a ray of sunshine. Kids were dancing, grown ups were drinking (responsibly), the sun was shining. We had some new tunes on our set list, which is always an iffy proposition, but my memory says we pulled it all together and sounded pretty good. We were almost as loud as our Hawaiian shirts, as Kipley’s video reveals:

A week after one 5-person version of the Lemons played at Hoboken’s Arts & Music Festival, another 5-person version put on a show. This time it was Kimberly who was missing.

Jessica and Eric, our faithful fans, invited us to come perform at their son’s preschool, and we all agreed it sounded like a fun gig, very different from anything else we’d done to that point. We viewed it as an experiment—if it went over well we could talk about booking lots of school shows and developing a set in that direction.

The only problem was, it would have to be on a weekday and Kimberly is a teacher with no way to take the day off. So we did it as an “unplugged” set (we had three mics for the lead singers) with no drummer… not very different from our very first set at Cabin Fever!

I think everyone had a good time. The usually squirmy 3-year-olds were riveted, to the astonishment of their teachers. It was certainly fun for us to play in such an intimate setting, to connect so closely with the kids. Jessica reports that her son and his classmates have been singing Fuzzy Lemons songs ever since!

She made a nice DVD to commemorate the event; at some point I should be able to post a snippet of it here. The only other thing I remember about that day was that it was POURING rain.

We’ll be back at the JCC on Sept. 14th; Jessica has arranged for us to play a big fund-raiser for their preschool. I’m excited and eager to play this gig—it’ll be a real test of our abilities to (a) play a big auditorium (you should see the size of this place!) and (b) play to a non-Hoboken crowd that hasn’t already memorized our material.

Wish us luck!

Dave

I wasn’t there for that one. I was away for the weekend with The ManKind Project, about which I’ll blog in another post. Anyway, the rest of the Lemons told me they had a great time. We’ll be back on the 3rd Street Stage (the children’s stage) at the Fall Arts & Music Festival on September 28.
